Mr A Shah is very pleasant and understanding, who took time with the patient to explain any worries the patient may have with regards to Hip replacement surgery. His bed side manner when he is talking to the patient, will try to elevate any worries or concerns that you may have both prior to and after the Operation. Mr A Shah then asked would I like to let my wife know following the operation how I was after the surgery. I was so pleased with the first R/Hip replacement, I need to have my L/Hip replaced and again I choose Mr A Shah to do this one as well. I now haven got my life back and enjoying my new found mobility, after years of suffering ......................

Mr Shah did a my knee replacement in June 2019. He listened to my personal preferences for a general anesthetic (i suffer from sever anxiety) and was very kind and explained things thoroughly. I was informed after the surgery it had taken a lot longer due to the terrible condition of my knee... however, i was up and walking the very next morning, and was discharged later that day.. only 22 hours after coming back from theater. I had worked hard prior to my surgery, and continued to make great progress after due to the continued care of my physio. At my 6 month review he said he was delighted with the knee as am I because for the first time in 15 years i am almost pain free. He is a wonderful surgeon. Thank you so much Mr Shah.

After one or two setbacks, once the decision was made for the operation everything kicked in i.e the physio home visit for aftercare and exercises to do before the operation and crutches supplied too. On the day of the operation everything was explained by the anaesthetist what would happen after he had administered the epidural with assurance of no pain after just numbness, which was true. Very positive and “ to the point “ explanation from the surgeon Mr Shah before the operation which was very helpful. He offered to ring my husband after the operation, which he did. All had gone well. Thank you. Everyone on his team couldn’t have made me feel more comfortable and reassured. Ward 16 nursing staff were caring and attentive in every way. I had lots of help and support from start to finish. Taking Mr Shah and the physios advice, my knee is now working well in every way and no pain just twinges as expected. Many, many thanks to Mr Shah and ALL.

Profile

I have been working within orthopaedics since 1998.

I have 3 orthopaedic degrees from India, 3 more from the UK including the FRCS in trauma and orthopaedics and am on the GMC specialist register to practice as a consultant in trauma and orthopaedics.

My specialist interest is in hips and knees(hoping the name of the website was a giveaway)

I do believe it is necessary to restrict ones practice to one or two specialist areas and I think its difficult to deliver great outcomes unless the focus is narrow

I have been in the NorthWest since 2003 and have enjoyed learning from some superb surgeons in some well run hospitals

This includes working at Wrightington Hospital(which is one of the centres of excellence for orthopaedic work) as the John Charnley Fellow learning how to tackle complex hip and knee problems.

My focus is on delivering an ethical and sensible consult to start with. An ability to explain the pathology (in simple terms!) and then laying out the options available is vital to this.

Sometimes its about giving you time to make that call and in some cases its about having that additional information to get your head around the problem.

With hips and knees I deal with all pathologies related to and including sports injuries, having a painful or unstable joint due to early wear and tear to severe forms of arthritis. Your treatment may range from getting an understanding and then walking away, physiotherapy, injections to the joint or around it, key hole surgery, various forms of joint replacements (talk to me about options and materials).

On a personal front, I have a teenage son and a younger daughter(who still thinks i am great), love the following in no particular order: cricket(mainly watching occasionally doing), swimming(do this one), and an occasional dram of a good single malt(definitely do this one)
